Naam-Sankirtan

9:18 AM Edit This 0 Comments »

In our busy lives, we often do not take time to chant and sing the Lord's name, naam-sankirtan. This is because we often underestimate its importance.

Hari naam-sankirtan is like 'aushadhi' (medicine) and also like 'amrit' (divine nectar). When we sing and chant the Lords name, all our sins are washed away. We gradually become cured of our sins.

The very last verse of the Shrimad Bhagavat Puraan, says:

nama-sankirtanam yasya, sarva-papa pranasanam,
pranamo duhkha-samanas, tam namami harim param.

"I offer my obeisances to the Supreme Lord Hari, the chanting of whose holy name destroys all sinful reactions. By offering obeisances unto Him relieves all material suffering."

We are all constantly suffering from the disease of 'bhava-rog', or the suffering of this material world. The Lord's name, however, is the medicine that can cure this disease.

The effects of this medicine may take some time to manifest. Just as when we have a medical problem, it can often take some time for the medication to work. Similarly, the effects of naam-sankirtan may not be instant, but it will eventually work.

We often find medication bitter and unpleasant and don't enjoy taking it. Similarly, Hari naam-sankirtanmay not appeal to everyone but if you give it a try and remain persistent, the curative effect on your life will be remarkable!

As these sins are gradually washed away, our hearts become purer and purer. Love grows more and more in our pure hearts and brings nectar into our lives. Hence, naam-sankirtan becomes like 'amrit', making our lives sweet and divine.

Similarly, listening to the holy past-times of the Lord in kathas can have the same effects. It acts as anaushadhi, washing away our sins and later brings amrit in our lives. This medicine can be administered very easily... All you have to do is listen!

True destination and Goal

9:08 AM Edit This 0 Comments »

All human beings are travellers or pilgrims on a long journey towards a higher goal and we often strive towards that goal. However, we often forget where we are headed. We have boarded the train of life but we have lost our ticket and thus, we do not know where we want to go. We are all honest, we all tread the path of truth and according to ethics, but we do not know the goal of our life.

It is not enough merely to be industrious nor is it good enough just to be an honest person. We must also be aware of our destination. If we are aware of our goal we may be inspired to hurry towards it but we have forgotten our goal in life and if suddenly we remember but don’t strive sufficiently to achieve it, it reflects our laziness. Once someone becomes habitually lazy it becomes a very difficult habit to remove and it is because of such laziness that the goal of life is forgotten.

The scriptures advise us that to attain true peace and happiness we must attain God and walk the path of a pilgrim. This is our true destination. In our everyday life we first wake up and then get up. However, in the spiritual life we must first get up and then wake up. The term 'getting up’ here means 'coming to your senses'. Hence, first come to your senses and then wake up to your divinity. On waking up in the divine consciousness strive to attain God. Stabilise the divinity in normal awareness.

I pray that in that year ahead, we all walk successfully on the pilgrim’s path, never forgetting our true destination and striving to achieve our goal.

Tyage so aage

"People who do not understand the greatness of Lord Shiva i.e. people who do not appreciate the significance of noble souls are not eligible to meet Lord Ram."

Though the Gods drank the elixir their fear did not get eliminated whilst Lord Shiva drank the poison at the request of Lord Vishnu yet he became the master of eternity.

When Lord Shiva drank the poison he neither swallowed it down his throat nor did he spill it out. He retained it in his throat as in both instances the poison would have proved to be fatal. If the poison had been spilled out then it would have harmed the society and if swallowed then it would kill the individual.

Thus you too should resolve firmly not to take it to your heart when someone expresses bitterness towards you, because if you do, your mind will get affected by it. It will increase hatred and bitterness and thus retard your emancipation. And if the anger aroused in your mind tries to come out in the form of foul words stop it midway in your throat because if the other person is affected by the bitterness of your words it will hurt the society.

It is only because of the greatness and nobility of Lord Shiva his story precedes that of Lord Ram's in Ramayana. "Tyage so aage" i.e. one who renounces comes first."
