Naam-Sankirtan

9:18 AM Edit This 0 Comments »

In our busy lives, we often do not take time to chant and sing the Lord's name, naam-sankirtan. This is because we often underestimate its importance.

Hari naam-sankirtan is like 'aushadhi' (medicine) and also like 'amrit' (divine nectar). When we sing and chant the Lords name, all our sins are washed away. We gradually become cured of our sins.

The very last verse of the Shrimad Bhagavat Puraan, says:

nama-sankirtanam yasya, sarva-papa pranasanam,
pranamo duhkha-samanas, tam namami harim param.

"I offer my obeisances to the Supreme Lord Hari, the chanting of whose holy name destroys all sinful reactions. By offering obeisances unto Him relieves all material suffering."

We are all constantly suffering from the disease of 'bhava-rog', or the suffering of this material world. The Lord's name, however, is the medicine that can cure this disease.

The effects of this medicine may take some time to manifest. Just as when we have a medical problem, it can often take some time for the medication to work. Similarly, the effects of naam-sankirtan may not be instant, but it will eventually work.

We often find medication bitter and unpleasant and don't enjoy taking it. Similarly, Hari naam-sankirtanmay not appeal to everyone but if you give it a try and remain persistent, the curative effect on your life will be remarkable!

As these sins are gradually washed away, our hearts become purer and purer. Love grows more and more in our pure hearts and brings nectar into our lives. Hence, naam-sankirtan becomes like 'amrit', making our lives sweet and divine.

Similarly, listening to the holy past-times of the Lord in kathas can have the same effects. It acts as anaushadhi, washing away our sins and later brings amrit in our lives. This medicine can be administered very easily... All you have to do is listen!

True destination and Goal

9:08 AM Edit This 0 Comments »

All human beings are travellers or pilgrims on a long journey towards a higher goal and we often strive towards that goal. However, we often forget where we are headed. We have boarded the train of life but we have lost our ticket and thus, we do not know where we want to go. We are all honest, we all tread the path of truth and according to ethics, but we do not know the goal of our life.

It is not enough merely to be industrious nor is it good enough just to be an honest person. We must also be aware of our destination. If we are aware of our goal we may be inspired to hurry towards it but we have forgotten our goal in life and if suddenly we remember but don’t strive sufficiently to achieve it, it reflects our laziness. Once someone becomes habitually lazy it becomes a very difficult habit to remove and it is because of such laziness that the goal of life is forgotten.

The scriptures advise us that to attain true peace and happiness we must attain God and walk the path of a pilgrim. This is our true destination. In our everyday life we first wake up and then get up. However, in the spiritual life we must first get up and then wake up. The term 'getting up’ here means 'coming to your senses'. Hence, first come to your senses and then wake up to your divinity. On waking up in the divine consciousness strive to attain God. Stabilise the divinity in normal awareness.

I pray that in that year ahead, we all walk successfully on the pilgrim’s path, never forgetting our true destination and striving to achieve our goal.

Tyage so aage

"People who do not understand the greatness of Lord Shiva i.e. people who do not appreciate the significance of noble souls are not eligible to meet Lord Ram."

Though the Gods drank the elixir their fear did not get eliminated whilst Lord Shiva drank the poison at the request of Lord Vishnu yet he became the master of eternity.

When Lord Shiva drank the poison he neither swallowed it down his throat nor did he spill it out. He retained it in his throat as in both instances the poison would have proved to be fatal. If the poison had been spilled out then it would have harmed the society and if swallowed then it would kill the individual.

Thus you too should resolve firmly not to take it to your heart when someone expresses bitterness towards you, because if you do, your mind will get affected by it. It will increase hatred and bitterness and thus retard your emancipation. And if the anger aroused in your mind tries to come out in the form of foul words stop it midway in your throat because if the other person is affected by the bitterness of your words it will hurt the society.

It is only because of the greatness and nobility of Lord Shiva his story precedes that of Lord Ram's in Ramayana. "Tyage so aage" i.e. one who renounces comes first."

Free of all fear

Dear Divine Souls,
Jai Shri Krishna

The world is full of fear: fear of others, fear of ourselves, fear of the future. Fear exists as long as there is misunderstanding; and there is no peace as long as there is fear. It is our misunderstanding that the material world is a reality. We are actually dreaming in the night of ignorance and we mistake this dream to be reality. The world is full of fear on account of this misunderstanding; hence there is no peace. How can this worldly fear be removed?

Imagine a man is dreaming while asleep in his air-conditioned room on a soft comfortable pillow. In his dream, he sees that he is in a forest and a tiger is chasing him. He is running for his life in immense fear. The man begins to sweat while sleeping on his bed. He tosses and turns and appears to be distressed. The man eventually shouts, “Help! Help! Somebody save me from the tiger! I’m going to be killed.” In reality, there is no forest or tiger but his fear is real. How can something unreal have such an effect?

The cries of the man wake up his wife who then tries to pacify him. She knows that her husband is seeing a bad dream. If her husband continues to cry for help, the wife may even begin to laugh, because she know it is not real. To save him from the non-existent tiger, she can do only one thing: she has to awaken him from his sleep.

In the same manner, when people, afraid of worldly pain, request a learned person for help and advice, the learned person often just laughs. He knows that there is only one remedy: to wake up to the reality.

Satsang is an endeavour to become awakened. The scriptures and saints awaken us. A true teacher (sadguru) is an awakened person who can pull us out of the dream state.

The tiger in the forest in the air-conditioned room is false. Once this reality is realised, the fear is gone! With the removal of misunderstanding, the fear goes and peace is established.

In the Ayodhyakaand of the Ramcharitmanas, Goswami Tulsidasji has written:
              hoi bibeku moha bhrama bhaagaa
                      taba raghunaatha charan anuraagaa /
                                  raama brahma paramaarath roopaa
                                              abigata alakha anaadi anoopaa //

"It is only when true discrimination dawns that the errors of delusion disappear. Then, with the coming of spiritual enlightenment, is born devotion to the feet of Lord Rama. This is the highest spiritual wisdom: to be devoted to the feet of Rama in thought, word and deed."

I pray that through the medium of satsang, we continue on our journey to become enlightened and free of all misunderstandings, and hence free of all fear.
                      With Blessings,

                                                Bhaishri

Bhaishri - "Live like the fly that sits on sugar"

5:01 AM Edit This 0 Comments »
Jai Shri Krishna
The Bhagavad-Gita talks of many ways, or paths, in which we can reach the Almighty.
For seekers of knowledge, there is the path of knowledge called ‘gyan yoga’
For people who have love and devotion towards God, there is the path of devotion called ‘bhakti yoga’. The majority of us are treading the path of ‘karma yoga’, the path of action. We are not sanyasi’s (ascetics). We are householders and we can learn from the Bhagavad-Gita how to live a fruitful, peaceful and happy life. We can learn how to enjoy all that life has to offer in a tasteful manner, while at the same time offering everything we have to the Almighty. We always prefer sweetness, whether in taste or in smell. We dislike bad odours and bad tastes. In many ways, we are like flies! However, the Gita teaches us that we should learn to live like the fly that sits on sugar, and not like the fly that sits on honey. Both of these flies enjoy sweetness; but the former is free to fly away after enjoying the sugar while the latter gets stuck in the honey and loses its freedom to fly.We need not feel sorry for being in the world. Nor should we blame life for various deceitful bonds. Nor do we need to pray to God for setting us free from this world. Instead of such negative thoughts, we should gladly accept the life bestowed upon us.People often say that this world is an illusion, but our longing for physical comforts does not cease, or even decrease! Why this fallacy? One should thank God for everything that He has given to us. One should accept it as a kind gift to be used humbly and to be offered back to Him with the same humility. Thinking negatively without renunciation is hypocrisy. There are devotees who do not like the world. They constantly say,”O God, You are good; but the world created by you is bad.” How correct are they in saying this? Is this their love for God? God will certainly not like someone talking ill of His creation. How can we speak negatively of all the things of this world that we ourselves long for throughout our lives? We should live the life given to us joyfully. The life and the teachings of Shri Krishna show us how to live. We need to be like the fly that enjoys the sweetness of the world without becoming attached to it. That way, we will enjoy all that we face and carry out all our actions in a fruitful manner. This is the secret to being a true karma yogi.

Bhaishri's Message from Kathas # 5

Purifying the Mind

Bhagavat katha enhances Bhakti Rasa. Nothing is as effective to purify our minds as Bhagavat katha and purity alone is achievement. Purity is the most superior and easiest means for attaining God. By repeating the name of God the feeling of void is eliminated from our life.

Tulasidasaji says:
"ehi kalikala na sadhana duja
joga jagna japa tapa brata puja
      ramahi sumiria gaia ramahi
      santata sunia rama guna gramahi
"

“In this Kali-yuga, there is no other means of worship, neither meditation, sacrifice, prayer, penance, vows nor rituals. Meditate only on Rama; sing only of Rama; and hear of only Rama’s infinite perfections.” (Uttarakanda129.6)

The Bhagavat katha indeed is the only way to achieve Bhagavat prema (devotion), which is the real goal. Thirst for love is an eternal permanent aspiration in a man’s heart and the Bhagavat katha bestows on us the love for God.
